Vietnam’s trade ports handled 11,086,142 TEUs of containers in total in 2016, which remained nearly unchanged from the previous year, according to statistics compiled by the Vietnam Seaports Association (VSA).

In breakdown, ports in southern Vietnam were responsible for 7,944,828 TEUs, which rose 2.1%, accounting for 71.7% of the pie. Those in the central area processed 476,748 TEUs, which soared 16.8%. Box throughput at ports in the north was also strong, registering an 8.2% increase to 2,664,566 TEU. Container lifting was sluggish at those in the Mekong Delta, which plunged 23.4% to 68,728 TEUs. 

In southern Vietnam, combined container throughput at the ports of Ho Chi Minh City and Dong Nai almost leveled off from a year earlier, which declined a minute 0.9% to 5,887,593 TEUs. In contrast, Ba Ria Vung Tau, which is called by large containerships operated in trunk east-west services, performed well, processing 1,988,507 TEUs, which hiked 10%. 

In the central area, Da Nang handled a brisk 320,000 TEUs, which surged 24%, and enjoyed an overwhelming share of 67% in the area. 

In the north, containers to and from Hai Phong swelled 6.5% to 1,986,630 TEUs, which accounted for 41% of the regional total. The second and third busiest ports in the region were Dinh Vu and Nam Hai Dinh Vu, which processed 649,224 TEUs, up 3.3%, and 526,202 TEUs, up 13.3%, respectively.
